When Is the Best Time to Measure Your Ring Size?

Choosing the right ring size might seem simple, but getting it wrong can lead to unnecessary hassle. Whether that’s a ring that constantly slips off or one that feels uncomfortably tight, what many people don’t realise is that your finger size actually changes throughout the day, meaning timing plays a big role in getting an accurate measurement.

That's why we have put together this helpful guide that will walk you through exactly when, and when not to measure your ring size. Helping you to get the perfect fit the first time.

Why Timing Affects Your Ring Size

Your fingers aren’t the same size all day. They naturally expand and contract due to several factors, including temperature, activity levels, and even hydration.

Normally, your fingers tend to be bigger in the morning as a result of nocturnal swelling. Due to lying horizontal for hours during sleep fluid is allowed to accumulate in your hands, making them feel puffy and rings feel tighter. This will resolve itself after an hour or two of moving around, returning to normal size. Contrary to this, your finger can also shrink in size in cold environments such as brisk winter days (always forget your gloves when its cold!).

This is why choosing the right time to measure your ring size is key to ensure your ring will feel comfortable in everyday conditions, not just in that moment.

The Best Time of Day to Measure Your Ring Size

So when is the best time to measure your finger? We feel and would recommend the ideal time to measure is in the late afternoon or evening.

By this point in the day:

  • Your fingers have naturally expanded to their largest size - giving you a more accurate representation of how your ring will fit during normal daily wear.
  • You’re more likely to get a realistic, everyday fit - helps you avoid a fit that feels fine at one moment but becomes uncomfortable as your fingers naturally expands.
  • You reduce the risk of choosing a size that’s too tight - Measuring when your fingers are slightly larger helps ensure the ring will remain comfortable even at its tightest point during the day.

Measuring at this time helps ensure your ring will remain comfortable throughout the day, rather than becoming restrictive later on.

When You Should Avoid Measuring Your Ring Size

While there is a right time to measure your ring size there are also a wrong time.

You should avoid measuring:

  • In cold weather - your fingers will shrink in the cold due to blood vessels constricting to conserver heat, reducing blood flow to the hands. (Wow Science)
  • In very hot conditions - your body naturally tries to cool itself by increasing blood flow to the skin, causing them to sell more than usual. So no morning saunas before measuring.
  • After exercise - Similar to hot conditions, physical activity boots circulation making your fingers expand. So after scoring that last minute winner and you want a commemorative ring, maybe wait till you have cooled down.
  • When dehydrated or unwell - how hydrated you are plays a big role in how your fingers fluctuate in size. Dehydration can sometimes cause your body to retain water, leading to slight swelling, while illness can also impact circulation and fluid balance. So wait till you get over that stubborn cold.
  • During pregnancy - a common physical effect of pregnancy is increased fluid retention and changes in circulation. This makes it harder to get an accurate, consistent measurement.

How to Get the Most Accurate Measurement

Here are our main tips to get the most accurate size:

  • Measure more than once - measuring just once may not give you the full picture. By checking your size multiple times over a few days, ideally at the same time of day, you’ll be able to spot any variations and choose a size that feels consistently comfortable.
  • Use a proper ring sizer - a proper ring sizer is designed to mimic the fit of an actual ring, giving you a much more precise result. It also allows you to test how the ring feels on your finger, rather than just measuring the circumference. Why not order your own free ring sizer here.
  • Aim for snug but comfortable - a well-fitting ring should feel secure without being restrictive. It should slide onto your finger with minimal effort but offer a slight resistance when you remove it, ensuring it won’t fall off easily.
  • Check the fit over your knuckle - the knuckle is generally the widest part of the finger. So even if the base of your finger measures smaller, your ring will still need to comfortably pass over the knuckle. This helps prevent the ring from spinning to loosely or getting stuck. (Not a great time)

What If You’re Between Sizes?

If you find yourself between sizes, it’s usually best to size up slightly rather than down.

A slightly looser ring is generally more comfortable and easier to wear daily, especially as your fingers naturally expand throughout the day.

This is particularly important for rings that are crafted from materials like tungsten, like our collection of Wonder Rings , which cannot be resized. Getting the closest possible fit from the start is essential.

Common Ring Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

Many ring sizing issues come down to a few simple but common mistakes. Being aware of these can save you time, money, and the hassle of returns or exchanges. (Though we do offer this for free if an issue does arise).

  • Guessing your size - It might be tempting to take a rough guess, but sizes can vary between fingers, hands, and even different styles of rings. Guessing often leads to a poor fit. Taking the time to measure properly is always worth it.
  • Measuring only once - Your finger size isn’t completely fixed and can change slightly throughout the day. Measuring just once doesn’t give you a reliable average. By checking your size a few times under normal conditions, you’ll get a much more accurate and consistent result.
  • Using inaccurate DIY methods - Using String, paper strips, or printable guides might seem like quick solutions, but they can easily stretch, slip, or be read incorrectly. This often results in measurements that are slightly off.
  • Choosing a size based on another ring - Using an existing ring as a reference can be helpful—but only if it’s worn on the same finger and fits perfectly. Rings worn on different fingers or hands won’t give an accurate size, and even a slightly loose or tight ring can lead you to choose the wrong size. Always double-check the fit rather than relying on assumptions.

Getting your ring size right isn’t just about measurement—it’s about timing, accuracy, and understanding how your fingers naturally change throughout the day.

By measuring in the evening, avoiding extreme conditions, and using the right tools, you’ll give yourself the best chance of finding a ring that fits comfortably every day.

Ready to Find Your Perfect Fit?

Using a proper ring sizer is the easiest way to ensure accuracy. If you’re unsure of your size, it’s always worth taking a few extra minutes to measure properly, it’ll make all the difference when your ring arrives.
