A ring should slide over your knuckle with a little resistance, but it shouldn't be painful or require excessive force to remove. The knuckle is often the widest part of the finger, so it's normal for the ring to feel slightly tighter as it passes over it.
Once the ring is in place, it should sit comfortably at the base of your finger without feeling too loose or spinning excessively. If it slips over your knuckle with no resistance at all, it may be too large. On the other hand, if it's extremely difficult to remove, it could be too tight.
The ideal fit is a ring that feels secure when worn but can still be removed with a gentle twist when needed.
